Biotech entrepreneur, Vivek Ramaswamy, is set to announce his candidacy for governor of Ohio next week. This move would require Ramaswamy to step away from his role with President Donald Trump’s incoming Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The Cincinnati native was slated to work alongside Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, overseeing DOGE.

According to NBC, Ramaswamy’s decision to run for office in Ohio was expected. “He’s leaving DOGE. He’s going to announce early next week for governor,” one source said. “It became increasingly clear that pursuing the governor’s race and running DOGE was not compatible. He’s leaving on good terms with Trump, Elon, and the team.”

Ramaswamy hinted at the transition in a post on Twitter/X with Musk:

Ramaswamy had previously been a contender for the Republican presidential nomination before becoming one of Trump’s prominent supporters. His Ohio gubernatorial bid follows a brief challenge for the Senate seat vacated by Vice President-elect JD Vance, which was ultimately filled by Lt. Gov. Jon Husted.

The governor’s race in Ohio is already heating up, though. Several high-profile Republicans, including state Attorney General Dave Yost and state Treasurer Robert Sprague, are prepping their campaigns. On the Democratic side, former state health director Amy Acton has declared her candidacy as well.
