Initiative 82 was discussed by the D.C. Council committee. This is an initiative to raise the minimum wage for tipped workers.

This change will help workers when they receive each pay check. Although this seems like an obvious yes, some aren’t in support of this like restaurant owner Mark Bucher who claim it will harm businesses and create confusion with new service charges. A survey found most restaurants are paying higher wages but facing declining profits.

The current minimum wage of tipped workers in The DMV are; $7.50 for Washington DC, $11.37 for Maryland and $10.28 for Virginia. Despite the challenges, many customers continue to tip as usual and workers continue to advocate for themselves.
