DC’s Whole Blood Program Saves Lives Boosts Survival Rate To 94%
D.C.’s Whole Blood Program, launched in April by Mayor Bowser and DC Fire and EMS, has drastically improved survival rates for patients needing blood transfusions in the field. Previously, only 30% of patients with severe bleeding survived. Now, that rate has surged to 94%.

Paramedics delivered their 200th unit of blood this weekend, helping save lives like Anthony Chappelle, who credits the program with saving him after a June shooting. Dr. David Vitberg, D.C. Fire and EMS medical director, calls the program a “game changer,” likening its impact to the invention of penicillin.

Blood transfusions in the field, though costly, are proving essential for trauma care, with rigorous protocols ensuring no waste and seamless integration with hospitals. Neighboring counties are also adopting similar programs.
