Listen Live

In the first of a four-part interview, Kanye West-the man who doesn’t do press-sat down with BBC’s Zane Lowe to discuss music and what he deems to be his purpose. In the 14-minute interview inside London’s Abbey Road Studios, Kanye, clad in his gold chain black T-shirt and army green coat, explained why he created Yeezus and how if it weren’t for Michael Jackson, he wouldn’t be here. Mr. West, who never pulls punches left us with a few quotables. Check out these six.

Go on…you know you want to.

1) His voice is still the same

Mr. West caught a lot of flack for his “fake voice” when he appeared on his Mother-In-Law’s now defunct daytime talk show. But now, about a month after the fact, Kanye shows that when he’s not fighting the paparazzi, or screaming on tracks, he’s actually quite (dare we say it) calm.

2) ”I was talking to Kid Cudi and said my mom got arrested for the sit ins, and now we’re more like the sit outs! Like sit off”

While discussing radio’s impact on the music business, North West’s daddy compared artists inability to be rebellious to the famous sit ins of the Civil Rights movement. Instead of making music the radio would have to play, artists now make music that would appease the radio.

Can’t front, the man’s got a point.

4) ”I showed people I understand how to make perfect. “Dark Fantasy” could be considered perfect.”

Arrogant or not, My Dark Twisted Fantasy, which sold 498,000 copies its first week, is arguably one of Kanye’s best albums, you know it, I know it, and Kanye knows it.

5) “I’m not here to make easy listening, or easy programmable music”

Kanye knew Yeezus wouldn’t be easily received simply because the music was jarring, disjointed and often times unpleasant to hear, but guess what, Kanye doesn’t give two sh*ts about it because that’s not what he’s here for.

6) ”This is what frustration sounds like”

Kanye said while creating Yeezus, he was processing several different types of information. Everything from learning about architecture, to taking meetings trying to get backing for his clothing line, Kanye created the music that was inside his head, which is why the album sounds the way it does.
